Sea urchin or as I call them, spiky balls are a great way to add some dimension to a gallery wall or add drama as a stand-alone piece of décor. Perfect so called show stoppers in any vignettes Spiky balls are my all time favorite pieces in the home decor. I have made them in so many styles and colors, Today I like to put to use some toothpick ! Are you ready for some sea urchin inspired budget friendly wall home decor diy? Easy steps to make a elegant home decor

As you can see materials are together and it is time to go to work. As I mentioned earlier I have made so many styles or that decor. Will share those photos later but for now I like to create flat sea urchin decor so I decided to cut my Styrofoam in half

There are so many ways you can go around it when it comes to paint. in my case with my latest obsession with white, black and gold I decided to spray paint my ball black.

As I was at spray painting I decided to add some color to my toothpicks. By doing so a nice background for my spiky home decor was created. As you can already see my colors of choice were black and gold but it is up to you what you like to paint them

Whole install is super easy … you can dip your toothpicks into hot glue before you insert them into styrofoam ball to secure your install or you can leave it like I did without any glue. I like to start with straight line of toothpicks for my first row. Second row is just simply interacting first. My choice was to make my first layer black second gold and as I was working my way out to the top I decided to just sprinkle with my gold toothpicks. My goal was to keep my urchin like home decor projects mostly black

As you can see even though I have just a bit of gold on my styrofoam ball both colors are nicely visible

and my toothpick craft is ready.. In the past I installed them on the hard surface and hang them on the wall in clusters of 3 on my accent wall. This time I like to keep them as additional accent piece in my vignettes.

I always have a hard time at the beginning to find my final place for new creations so I tried them everywhere. They actually complement super nicely my Dollar Tree drawers I build from picture frames. More details about that project you can find below . I love the way they came out so I made my drawers in 2 different colors
