Vintage Spool Patriotic Wreath with Fabric Bow DIY
A Simple Patriotic Project With Vintage Charm
This patriotic spool wreath is made using wooden ribbon some vintage spools, fabric strips, wooden beads, greenery, and a handmade Mama Bow for a soft vintage-inspired look. Using flexible 18-gauge wire instead of a traditional wreath form keeps this DIY patriotic wreath lightweight, bendable, and easy to style for summer decorating. I wanted this patriotic spool wreath to feel cozy and collected rather than overly themed. The mix of soft fabrics, lace, frayed edges, and Americana colors gives it a warm handmade feel that works beautifully with farmhouse, cottage, and vintage decor styles. There’s something about red, white, and blue decor mixed with soft neutrals, lace, and vintage textures that feels so cozy to me. I wanted this wreath to feel handmade and collected — almost like something you found at an old country market and brought home for summer decorating.
This wreath was made using ribbon spools, wooden beads, greenery, and strips of fabric tied into a soft, oversized bow. I love how lightweight and relaxed it feels compared to traditional bulky wreaths. It hangs beautifully on an old window frame, cabinet door, or even layered into a shelf vignette.
And the best part? You can completely customize the colors and ribbons to match your own style.

How To Make The Patriotic Spool Wreath
Step 1: String Your Spools & Beads
Start by threading your wooden beads and ribbon spools onto a long piece of twine or jute rope. Alternate sizes and colors to create movement and balance throughout the wreath.
I mixed patriotic stars, ticking stripes, and solid colors to keep it interesting without looking too busy.

Step 2: Form The Wreath Shape
No need for wreath form .. I used 18 gauge wire and started to thread all on .. .. and here is where your preference can shine .. You can mix spools big and small .. you can add small or big beads .. its all up to you . Once everything is threaded, gently bend the strand into a wreath shape and tie the ends securely together.
Don’t worry if it looks a little imperfect — the relaxed shape actually adds charm to this project.
Step 3: Add Greenery
Tuck greenery into one side of the wreath using hot glue or floral wire. I like keeping greenery asymmetrical because it softens the overall look and gives it that collected farmhouse feel.
Step 4: Create The Fabric Bow

This is my favorite part.Fabric patriotic rag bow tutorial
Instead of using one traditional bow ribbon, I layered torn fabric strips, lace, ticking fabric, and patriotic ribbon together to create a soft flowing bow.
To make it:
- Cut fabric into long strips ideally stiffen pieces are better for this one. Dip your fabric in ModPodge or glue and dry well after you select them
- Layer different textures together
- Pinch in the center
- Tie tightly with twine or another fabric strip
- Fluff and separate the loops
Then glue your embellishment or brooch into the center.

Step 5: Attach The Bow
Glue or tie the bow onto the lower side of the wreath. Let the tails hang naturally for that relaxed vintage look.

A Little Tip
If you don’t have ribbon spools, you could also recreate this idea using:
- Empty thread spools
- Wooden curtain rings
- Large beads
- Mini embroidery hoops
- Even rolled fabric pieces
That’s the beauty of crafting — using what you already have and making it your own.
Before the patriotic spool wreath ever happened… there was this soft shabby chic version. 🤍
This little wreath was actually my inspiration piece — the one that made me fall in love with using spools, wooden beads, torn fabric, and wire together. I loved how lightweight and delicate it felt compared to a traditional wreath form.
The patriotic version may have gotten the stars and stripes makeover ❤️🤍💙… but this sweet neutral floral wreath is where the idea first started.
Sometimes one simple project turns into ten more ideas. That’s the beauty of creating. ✨
