Double-Sided Clothespins Starburst DIY
I honestly started this project with one simple idea in mind… a patriotic clothespin sunburst. But somewhere in the middle of layering, painting, distressing, and experimenting, it turned into TWO completely different looks in one project — because yes… this wall decor is double sided 😍One side became a bold Americana-inspired statement piece with layered stars and vintage texture, while the other side transformed into a soft blue and white floral wall flower that barely even looks like clothespins anymore.
The best part?
This project was made from simple wooden clothespins, layered in clusters to create depth, movement, and dimension.
And judging by all the messages I received, many of you wanted to know exactly how I folded, layered, and lifted the clothespins to create the dimensional effect — so today I’m sharing the full process!
Supplies I Used
- Wooden clothespins around 60
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Cardboard
- Wooden beads (for lifting layers)
- Paint in patriotic colors
- Decorative napkins for decoupage
- Mod Podge
- Gold wax or Rub n Buff
- Decorative stars
Step 1: Creating the Base Shape
I started by separating the clothespins and arranging them into uneven layered arms instead of making every section perfectly identical. Some of the larger arms have smaller layered clusters attached on top, which gave the finished piece more movement and a fuller dimensional look.

so created 5 clusters of 5 cascading clothespins and 5 of 4 cascading clothespins

You could install them close together like it shows in my ” sketch “here but I chose to pushed them out a bit from center and add a circle on both sides to have a center for the flower

I wanted to have a center in my starburst `and decided to make center little bigger as i was glueing and sandwich them with cardboard circles on both sides to have that sunburst created out of clothespins
Step 3: The Patriotic Side

Filled center with wooden beads and painted 3 clusters navy and then after each cluster half white and half red to follow american flag pattern .
To bring a bit more diamention to my project i made 5 more small clothespins clusters and installed them on bigger point as you can see on a pic. Love its feel now
I added layered wooden stars and a bead center to complete the patriotic sunburst look. I added layered wooden stars and a bead center to complete the patriotic sunburst look.
This side feels bold, rustic, and perfect for summer decorating.

For the Americana side, I painted sections in deep navy blue, red, and white, then lightly distressed the edges with gold wax for a vintage finish.

Love making budget friendly starburst projects for instant decor .. See this fun project I made out of brown bag HERE
Step 4: The Blue and White Floral Side
The back side completely surprised me. I decoupaged blue and white floral napkins directly onto the layered clothespins, allowing the uneven edges and wood texture to peek through slightly. Made some more clusters and decided to layer a bit

To create height between the layers, I experimented with wooden beads placed underneath some of the clothespin clusters.

This helped lift the second layer slightly off the base so the design would feel more sculptural instead of flat. The layering is what really transformed this project from simple clothespins into statement wall decor.

Decided to fill center of my flower with my hot glue rose .. See details HERE how you can make one too

Love budget friendly projects … HERE is another one I made out of plastic spoons
Why I Love This Project
What I love most about this piece is that it doesn’t scream “clothespins.”
From a distance, it looks layered, sculptural, and collected — and that’s what makes simple projects like this feel special.
It also proves that inexpensive materials can become beautiful statement decor with a little creativity and layering.
Which Side Would You Display?
Would you hang the patriotic Americana side 🇺🇸
or the soft blue and white floral side 💙
I honestly can’t decide anymore!
