Paper Mache Stunning Bottle Makeover
I have always wanted to make a paper mache craft! Made few batches when I was a little girl with my Mom back in Poland . Created some bowls, figurines and lots of other little things. I think it is time to put paper Mache technical’s queen into something bigger. Last week I was looking at the large pile of egg cartons I seem to be saving for who knows what and decided to actually use them. I was on the mission with egg cartons crafts and will share all of them with you. I have made flowers that are part of my wreaths, vases and even lamps. Today I would like to my egg carton mache and work with big bottle of wine and hopefully transform it into a original home decor piece . Are you ready for some bottle makeover? Are you ready for some budget friendly home decor diy?

Items needed to complete that project
- Paper Egg cartons
- Elmers glue
- Salt
- Hot water
- paint I used acrylic chalk paint from Decor Art
Let’s go to work then shall we ?
Tear the egg cartons ( I used 2 cartons) into tiny pieces and put them in a large bowl, then add hot tap water to completely cover them. Soak for several hours or like me overnight.
Egg cartoons don’t turn to oatmeal as paper would do but they are for sure much softer and easy to work with after overnight soaking. Time to squeeze out all that water and break them even more apart
Believe it or not my standing mixer did an awesome job. My egg cartons are all beautifully broken a part. Perfect consistency for my project.
Paper Mache
Once you are happy with how smooth your mixture is, add a couple teaspoons of salt to help discourage mold and lets begin to KNEAD IT a bit. In order to create tight dough I like to add 2 TABLESPOONS of Elmers Glue for EACH CUP of paper mixture. When you feel that your fingers are sticky your pulp should be ready to use.
If you would like a colored paper mache craft add some food coloring or paint. If you are using a food coloring you need to let it sit for couple of hours for color to sink in. I am not going to add any color yet ..hopefully I will be able to paint after.
Time to put our new paper Mache to work
So this is the bottle I like to use today …it was a part of my decor for few years now but I think it is time to change its look I think. I am so ready for my bottle makeover
I am so new to this paper Mache application so I decided cover my bottle with a coat of glue and start to attach my paper pulp on it. Hopefully that will reinforce even more my pulp and keep it on forever
I was so happy that my freshly made egg carton paper Mache is beautifully staying on my bottle. I was so pleased at the extra details it was promising to add in its raw form, very earthy look. My bottle makeover is really taking its own spin
To my surprise I still had some paper Mache left so I decided to add some of twirls to it .
if you follow me for some time you know I love details here and there so I really really had so much fun with this portion. Truly enjoy my paper Mache craft
Decided to leave my cop and handle free so I can paint it solid color later hopefully. I think I am done and now it is time to let all dry up.Thank goodness it is a nice weather so I placed my bottle in the sun hoping that will dry quick so I can move to another step – Painting
Final step – Painting
My bottle is finally dry after 2 days of drying … so pleased with it !! Love that earthy looking texture a lot. My egg carton craft just got really elevated. LOVE IT ! Can’t wait to paint it! Love me some good egg carton craft
Since I really love paper Mache texture on my bottle I decided to use my chalk paint to elevate a bit more. My original thought was to accent my swirls with glossy White paint but I didn’t have much on hand so for now I think I am going to leave all white.
You know I love to experiment so I decided to give a try my gold paint to see how that will look. If you remember I left my cap and handle untouched from my paper Mache appliction and it was in gold. I am on that goldish streak recently a lot so why not. I really think I like it for now …so GOLD IT IS
and I have to tell you I enjoy that look for now a lot. Usually I like to add a coat of Mod-Podge at the end to seal all in but I will wait for now because I may change my mind few days from now about my choices of color.
Egg carton craft bottle makeover is really super fun to make
I think I am ready to try my freshly done wine bottle in few vignettes to see what I like to do and if I like my color choices. So get ready …lol
