Supplies needed to create crocheted dome diy
How to make a doily cake dome
As I mentioned earlier I was unloading my “things” and wasn’t paying attention but when I look up to organize all i saw this … lol All of a sudden those two pieces started to “talk to me” .. I knew that they meant to be together! How easy is that ! Let’s learn together how to make a dome out of doily.
I have made similiar project in the past . Check all details HERE or below
Read all details about this project HERE . Super fun project and useful too
Just because I was experimenting this time with doily that need to fit my stand I was on the mission to find right size bowl that would accommodate nicely my stand. This little plastic container I bought at Dollar Tree was perfect width but it was not high enough so i decided to pile all up with my bowl to see if that would work
Look at that ! it does work ! It is time to go to another step
Let the work begin!
- Place a large mixing bowl upside down on a protected work surface and cover it with plastic wrap. Drape the crocheted doily over the bottom of the bowl.
Make sure as you are wrapping your template all is nicely covered so Mod-Podge only sticks to doily
All is ready nicely secured so it is time to work with doily now. As you can see bottom of it has a little fair … I dont mind it but for this project and especially because my doily has forgiving pattern I decided to adjust things.
I decided to cut couple motives and connect them together. As you can see on the last picture it doesn’t show I made cut

Pour Mod Podge into a medium mixing bowl. Submerge the doily in the Mod Podge, making sure the fibers are completely saturated. As you have all there cover your bowl wrapped with saran wrap with Mod-Podge too
Remove your doily from Mod- Podge and spread around your frame . Add some if needed to make sure all is covered
As you can see all is nice and snug and now it is time for time to do its job .It is time to let it dry overnight at least
Use a sponge paintbrush to apply another coat of Mod Podge to the doily; let dry completely. Repeat until the doily is firm to the touch.
I was trying to speed things up and brought my dome outside to dry in the sun … It didnt help much since it was a bit humid out there so waiting is much better
Time for a reveal cake dome diy
Finally time has arrived and all is dry . It is time to remove carefully your “starched” or stiffen doily and see if all is dry.
it seams all is good so it is time to carefully remove the hardened doily from the bowl and carefully peel away and discard the plastic wrap.
All seamed to be good and nicely stiffen without foil .. Time to clean up some Mod Podge film in the openings and finally check its look on a stand
Little wooden bead on top to bring small detail and all is set .. my crocheted dome looks soo good at least in my eyes
Time for some pictures so i can show you how awesome it looks. Love me my new cake dome diy
As I was trying all different arrangements I noticed that my crocheted dome looks like mini cute lamp..hmm. That maybe my next project .. hey you never know
There is something about those little details in my tray .. I am still using this one !
