On my recent trip to thrift store I spotted a ginger jar so it was no brainer I had to get one! My goal was to decoupage some napkins on it to bring that intricate design.Are you ready for some fun Ginger jar makeover? I am super excited about this project! According to Google “The ginger jar originated in the days of the Qin Dynasty (221 BCE-207 BCE) as a storage receptacle for spices like salt and ginger. When ginger became a chief export to the Western world, the vessels in which it was stored and transported became known as “ginger jars.”
Ginger jars are very appreciated by porcelain collectors who cherish them for their beautiful and intricate designs. But ginger jars weren’t always this popular, especially in Europe, and they weren’t always called ginger jars. . That’s also when they started being used as decorative objects.

As I mentioned earlier I am super excited about this project! Here is the jar found at the local thrift store that we will work on. There is nothing wrong with it ..just doesn’t fit my decor. Are you ready to have some fun? Have you tried to decoupage on round surfaces yet ?

Depending on application of my napkin i either choose full paint coverage or just partial like in this case. I am going to be decoupaging whole napkin on my ginger jar makeover project
How to decoupage napkin on round surface
Usually when I start my decoupaging on the round surface I like to start from highest ..fullest point and this time is my middle of ginger jar. To make this process successful that means almost wrinkle free application of Mod- Podge in section is crucial. NOTE … make sure to separate ply’s before you start
Just before you start application process make sure to leave off enough napkin on the both ends of your surface as it shows on the bottom pictures
if you read my blog post HERE about my tips and tricks in decoupaging process you know I love to use crumbled up saran wrap to press on my napkin to make sure there are no wrinkles
Let’s make things easier now
My ginger jar was thankfully perfect size for the napkin I chose to use. No additional cuts or additional pieces in the most visible part were needed.
Ok now it is time to work on the smaller portion in my ginger jar makeover. In this part i like to cut my napkin in some areas and remove some of it simply by making angle cuts. Check picture below. It is super important for that kind of project when full napkin is used to use the one that have forgiving print.
Perfect thrift store home decor idea
Again as it was done on the fuller portion of my jar working in section is crucial. That means applying small amounts of mod-podge for napkin decoupage to avoid wrinkles
I like to wrap my project with leftover napkins to have it all finished. As you can see I have almost NO WRINKLES ON MY PROJECT. SUPER HAPPY!!! My trash to treasure diy is looking sooo awesome! Wish that you could see it in person.

How to decoupage napkin on the lid in my trash to treasure ginger jar diy
That is a tricky portion but it is soo fun to see how all comes together.
What I like to do is to cut much bigger piece of napkin to make sure whole surface is covered
Cutting small opening in the middle is my favorite way . My goal was to accent that top knob with some color
As you can see small cut was just perfect. Cut around to make sure edges are even and it is time to bring Mod Podge to our thrift store makeover again.
As it was before .. work in sections to make sure all is with no wrinkles. Thank goodness cutting my napkin wasn’t necessary.
Smooth your wrinkles with saran wrap and you are all set
I couldn’t be more happy with this project !!! Wrinkles even in the lover sections are not visible.
I usually let all dry completely before final coat of Mod-Podge or varnish application. As I mentioned earlier I like to accent my jar with some solid color so as I am waiting for all to dry I decided to start now painting. Don’t you just love this project already? As I always say detail bring sooo much.
