Handmade No-Sew Rag Doll DIY

This is the project that I like to share was on my mind the longest time. I like to hand make Rag Doll, the one that you really don’t need to have any sewing skills. I want to make one with high pigtails. Never made one, but played a lot with, as I was growing up. My Mom used to make them for me all the time. I had entire collection of them. Wish I had some pictures to show you. They are all back in Europe so maybe one day I will share those. Have to admit, I am a bit scared to make one because I do have a big shoes to fill. I just feel that I am ready. Never paid too much attention on how my Mom was making them but I am hopeful. Let’s make a keepsake handmade doll together.

I decided to go and make that project with my Facebook Community live. My friends there are super awesome and supportive so I know they will help me out if I am in doubt. Join me on Facebook HERE

My dish towel had a nice hem all around so I decided to use that as a part of my doll making process. Didn’t have idea what I will use it for but I was on the mission to nicely cut all edges away

When all edges were removed I decided to plan a shape of my rug doll body . In my case all was predited by the size of wooden ball I had that will function for my as a doll head

Decided to cut around 6 inches from my dish towel and round all edges.

How to create easy body of a rag doll

This portion can be done with robber band or hot glue. I decided to loose stitch my freshly cut shape all around edges holding around 1 n

My rag doll body is squared in so it is time to fill it up. Polyfil was my choice since I had that on hand. You can use fabric scraps to do that too . My goal was to fill it loosely for that sweet alive like look

Body is formed

My biggest fear was a head since I didnt have many choices. My goal was to have at least 10 inches high doll but at the same time to be proportionate

Just to make sure that my head will stay put …. I decided to add a cake pop stick inside that will support a bit of my wooden bead

How to make Pigtails

Time to work on my doll head. Let me tell you I pictured her with high pigtails. It maybe too much to handle for my first doll but I was ready to go for it

My plan was to create tassel like groupings of yarn that will be easier to maneuver on my big wooden bead. My goal was to cover half of my wooden bead.

Let’s put some hot glue to use and install our tassels that are hopefully make super cute hair for my doll

It may look a bit wonky now but I know hot glue will help me with that part a lot. I used 2 long tassels for the hair and 2 smaller one for her pigtails

Little big of pom pom ribbon around my doll neckline will not only add additional detail but will also reinforce my pleads

Super excited to see my doll coming together little by little … Time to make some hands… and it was another decision I needed help with . My Facebook friends and I agreed that wider are looking much better. Do you remember that those strips are pieces or trim that my dish towel was finished with ?

Handmade rag doll draft is looking super cute ! Don’t you think so ? Head is a bit tilted but I love it !

I enjoyed doing the first of this lesson but after pulling the stitched area and lightly fill the bag there were nothing else printed in what to do beyond that point so I really had to guess what to do, I do sew and do make cloth dolls so figured it all out and felt it came out well, I used a bouquet of flowers in her hands out of felt which I made only wish that I knew how to send photographs so you you see the finished product I also painted a face on my ball.
